The EV industry is in the midst of a transformative shift, as automaker Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) declared its ambitions to unveil an electric vehicle with a 10-minute recharge time and a 1,000-kilometer travel range by 2028.
This undertaking exemplifies the formidable challenge posed by developing next-generation EV batteries. It is not only about speedy recharges but also about maximizing energy density while minimizing weight, ensuring longevity, and broad temperature versatility, all at an affordable cost.
Reports have highlighted the struggle of electric car drivers in cold weather, with freezing temperatures leading to a dramatic decrease in driving range. Even industry leader Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has grappled with these issues, underscoring the urgency to address the limitations of current battery technology.
Amidst these challenges, Worksport Ltd (NASDAQ:WKSP) has shown initiative by collaborating with Infineon Technologies AG (OTC:IFNNY) to develop a portable battery system, COR, integrated with SOLIS, a solar-powered tonneau cover. This innovative system, which can be recharged via a wall outlet or solar panel, is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain, offering a practical solution to the obstacles facing EV drivers.
By incorporating Infineon’s GaN power semiconductors, Worksport will reduce the weight of its battery system by 33% and lower system costs by up to 25%, while also contributing to global energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions.
The current state of EV technology, as evidenced by Tesla’s recent setbacks in cold weather, underscores the pressing need for breakthroughs in battery design. Critically, Worksport’s forthcoming COR battery system represents a promising step toward assuaging range anxiety and promoting wider EV adoption, especially in adverse climates.
