Rivian’s Innovative Approach: Eliminating Key Fobs for New R1 Deliveries

Revolutionary Decision by Rivian

California-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) has taken a bold step by discontinuing the provision of key fobs to new customers. Instead, new Rivian owners will have to make do with a key card or the brand’s mobile app for vehicle access, unlocking, and driving.

The Shift in Customer Experience

Recent reports indicate that the key fob is no longer included at delivery, with customers having the option to purchase it separately from Rivian’s Gear Shop at a later time. An exchange between a Rivian representative and a new customer was shared on Reddit, shedding light on this operational change. Notably, the key fob is temporarily unavailable at the gear shop, creating a slight inconvenience for potential buyers.

Rivian is yet to provide an official statement in response to the inquiries made by Benzinga regarding this transition.

Accessing Vehicles in a New Light

Prior to this change, Rivian had been known to offer new vehicle owners both key cards and a key fob. The key card, resembling a credit card in size, utilizes NFC technology for vehicle access. To lock/unlock the vehicle and initiate driving, customers simply need to tap the card against the door handle and interior, respectively.

Alternatively, customers can leverage the Rivian App on their smartphones to seamlessly operate their vehicles.

Industry Trends and Insights

Rivian’s decision to exclude key fobs aligns with a broader industry trend. Tesla, a pioneer in the electric vehicle sector, also refrains from providing key fobs to customers. Those interested in a Tesla key fob can acquire one for an additional $175 through the company’s online store.
