A New Era Unveiled at South Fork Dairy
In an audacious move, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. announced the groundbreaking of a renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at South Fork Dairy in Dimmitt, TX. The facility, situated in the midst of a 16,000-cow herd, will churn out RNG, a pristine transportation fuel crafted from organic waste that boasts a detrimental carbon-intensity score.
The construction of the digesters and processing plant is forecasted to wield an $85 million price tag and is on track to be finalized by 2025. Once operational, the South Fork Dairy RNG facility is slated to emerge as one of the behemoths of RNG production in the United States, purveying an estimated 2.6 million gallons of RNG annually. The entirety of this RNG fuel will infuse itself into Clean Energy’s expansive network of stations that spans the nation.
Riding the Green Wave
“We are exhilarated to kick off the South Fork Texas project. Installing anaerobic digesters in a sprawling dairy like South Fork will not only enable the dairy owner, Frank Brand, and his crew to harvest and capitalize on massive quantities of manure waste, but also to reap the environmental bonanzas that an RNG facility brings. It is an honor to have Frank, an eminent figure in the dairy industry, as our partner,” expressed Clay Corbus, senior vice president of renewables at Clean Energy.
In the words of Frank Brand, the proprietor of South Fork Dairy, “The project not only allows us to transform our waste into a clean, usable sustainable fuel but also assists us in managing manure, a herculean task for a dairy of our magnitude. This initiative not only steers us towards sustainability but also stands as a beacon that I hope many other dairies will aspire to follow.”
Environmental Prowess Amplified
Agriculture in the U.S. contributes close to 10% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as per the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By corralling methane from farm waste, these emissions can be significantly curbed. RNG, a transportation fuel birthed solely from organic waste, has been shown to decrease GHG emissions by a remarkable 300% compared to diesel. Its environmental credentials are so impeccable that the California Air Resources Board endows RNG sourced from dairy farms with an average carbon-intensity score of -330, radically surpassing the scores of electric vehicles charging on the current grid.
Driving Toward Decarbonization
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. stands as a stalwart in the transportation sector, championing the cause of decarbonization through the cultivation and dissemination of renewable natural gas (RNG), an eco-friendly fuel hewn by capturing methane from organic waste. Facilitating multitude of vehicles, ranging from airport shuttles to municipal buses to heavy-duty trucks, in slashing their greenhouse gas emissions, Clean Energy operates an extensive network of fueling stations across the U.S. and Canada, along with RNG production facilities nestled in dairy farms.
Looking Forward
The unveiling of the South Fork Dairy RNG facility heralds a radical stride towards a cleaner, greener future, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable transportation solutions. As the wheels of progress continue to turn, the horizon shines bright with promise and potential, beckoning forth a landscape where renewable energy takes center stage in the narrative of fuel production and environmental stewardship.
