U.S. stocks traded mixed, with the Dow Jones index falling around 50 points on Thursday.

Fastenal Company (NASDAQ: FAST) saw a surge in its stock price today after reporting quarterly financial results that exceeded expectations. Earnings per share came in at 46 cents, outpacing market estimates by a cent. Quarterly sales hit $1.76 billion, slightly edging out forecasts of $1.75 billion.

This unexpected financial win sent Fastenal shares skyrocketing by 7% to $67.81 on Thursday.

Several other major stocks also experienced significant gains during this session.

  • Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE: BTU) rose 8.5% to $25.27 after it was announced the company will join the S&P SmallCap 600.
  • Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE: TSM) climbed 8.1% to $111.26 after reporting better-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results.
